Congratulations you have arrived at one of surfing's best kept secrets … Telo Island Lodge and the amazing waves of the Pulau Batu Batu region. Please take the time to look around the site and check out one of the planets most beautiful surfing paradise's.
Dangerous Dan Corbett one of our guiding team is just about to climb back in the saddle but we figured we would find out what he has been up to in the break and as it turns out his life outside of the resort is just as much fun as it is at the resort.

I started off with Whistler for Christmas and new year, the snow was insane and the nightlife was even better. Then back in WA I scored a little tow session with my bro and a mate, camped down south for the night and the waves were great fun and there were a couple of nuggets that hit the reef.

Been fishing heaps in the break, getting a few nice fish and a couple of crays as well. Perfect when the surfs small to take a couple of mates out and a couple of beers and it is always is a good time.

I have Been going down to the local golf club and having a few games of golf, my golf game hasn’t been the best but still had great fun, havin a few beers while playing golf always a laugh and definitely a lot of looking in the bushes for golf balls.

I also surfed in the Jim Beam Surf-tag event down south. Great weekend, we almost made the final but just got pipped, good waves all day and then after with a few beers a party at the pub after the preso's. Epic night but I was feeling pretty hung over the next day but it was all worth it epic weekend.
I’m champing at the bit to get stuck into a few of those all day surf attacks out at the lodge and look forward to seeing you all soon.
Corbo.

This journal is a special one, as a surf guide i am always excited to meet and hang with all the guests we have here at the lodge but this guest is a very special person and also one of the most influential surfers of all time, The master Mr Bob Mctavish.

------------------------------------------
Hey everybody I'm back. So the last couple of days has been busy-busy, so busy I had to say it twice. First was another Nias crossing to take the building team back as their time here at the lodge was up, much to their disappointment.

They did an awesome job on the board facility and there is just some weatherboards to go on and some slats to pimp the place out and I’ve really enjoyed finishing it off with our local staff members.

Kiki our maintenance man has put in all the lights so come sundown the place looks amazing, so the only thing left to do is install the board racks and its a wrap.
On the surfing and fishing front, I had a surf with Gus around the left last night and it was a fun 2-3foot session with just the 2 of us trading waves just before sunset. Then this morning it has backed off again, but it is looking like a nice swell on the way in a few more days. Trawling back to the lodge this morning we came across a decent sized Trevally and in a few hours time it will be unreal to give her a taste;-)

Cheers
Dane.

Some big news, I have my partner in crime (Gussy) back at the lodge now, he returned home last night to be greeted with a 80% completed new board shed which I dare say he was blown away by.Today we put all the framing up for the walls and board lockers and finished the path across to the Managers House. Max and the rest of the RAC team are out having an afternoon fish while I sit here and write this journal in some well-deserved air conditioning.
This is maybe the last time you will see the plastic boat looking like this as we have just received our delivery of some fresh stainless steel piping which will be used to transform the plastic boat formally known as Stingray into the new name of BIG-TIME!

I’m so happy with how hard everybody is working out here at the moment to get the Lodge looking tip top coming into the new season, Everybody is helping one another and its a good feeling when you see all staff with big smiles on their faces.

It’s going to be a good year!

So the last 2 days have been interesting to say the least, a nias crossing in the speed boat to drop Mick and Selby back turned into a two day affair with weather turning on us half way across the straight we were unable to return back until late yesterday afternoon which meant we spent a night in Teluk Dalam and waited for the weather to become more favorable, before making a break for it in the afternoon..

---------------------
Wowza! What a day we awoke to another decent sized weather event which kept us all in bed for a extra hour this morn but I think we were more than happy after the work that’s been going down on site here.

After I did a quick trip to Telo and checked the left on the way back and saw it was 4 feet and glassy due to the weather that had just passed.

I passed the info to the building crew and after they finished the fascia on the new board facility ( So the local roofing boys could go ahead) it was time to go and have some fun and that we did. After a 3 hour sesh we all came home content and had a nice feed care of Restu’s new kitchen skils and started on the flooring that our pet monkey Rastus thought she would look over and make sure it was all up to scratch.
The highlight of the day was to come though…

Then it was time for me to finally step up after 11 years and slip over and drop the knee up the point on sunset and propose to Selby, to my delight she said yes so I'm officially happily engaged:-)… overall a good day to remember
Terima Kasih,
Dane-o
-------------------------------------
The last 2 days we have had sporadic internet due to a couple of late arvo tropical downpours that are par for the course in the tropics but we still managed to get a bit done on the board facility and get a few waves out at kindys.

The roofing team from the village have started on the thatched roof and it’s starting to look pretty cool it was really good to see with my own eyes how it is all put together. We use the local community for as much as we possibily can and this special skill is a great one to keep going when so many villages now just run with tin roofs…

Selby has found her favorite part of the island which is the sand spit and the crystal clear water that blows her away so we have had a couple of swims up there and it makes for some really clear under water shots.

Thomas and Michelle have headed for Medan to follow up on a few logistic things and scope out our supply chain before heading back to HQ to collate data on the trip, it was good to have those guys around and you will all notice a big change in the place on the hospitality front this season.
I’ve gotta roll, swells rising.

-----------------------------------
Today was another day on the building site for a couple of reasons, the first being small swell and the other a cooler morning. Working in the sun on a building site when your right on the Equator makes summer in Australia seem like a nice stroll in a dry room, anyway all the workers smashed it out in the cool morning air and got the new board shed looking awesome. Next step is probably rafters and then a roof. We all split into teams to keep things moving along with Maxy as head builder keeping us all on track.

Once work on the super board shed stopped for the day Selby and her dad Mick took a trip to Telo to visit the local tavern for the afternoon while the rest of the RAC crew went for an arvo fish.

Selby was hassling me to teach her to paddleboard so we did that as well and she was blown away… GREAT DAY!!!!!

At the moment we have some industry leading hospitality consultants out at the resort (Thomas and Michelle) and they have been unreal with the staff and today was Ria's and Restus chance to learn some new skills witch they were stoked about. We have also had the head of our Tello family Pak Leung onsite who has been a massive with his handy hands.

The surf is due to kick up a bit in the next few days so keep an eye on the surf report for updates.

As you know our guides at TIL are pretty legendary. It’s par for the course that you’re a more than capable surfer and have all the relevant qualifications in everything from medical emergency’s through to speed boat maintenance. These are the people you will spend the majority of your time with so we thought it was only fitting we have them give you a little bit of a view of the TIL world through their eyes. We’re going to open things up with Dane Pioli who is the Marine Operations Manager out at TIL.
Dane is a former Australian Longboard Champion, swift on all forms of surf craft who’s residing on the Gold Coast when not on Island but is a Campbelltown boy at heart. Our plan is for the boys to keep you up to date with thing via a semi regular report that may or may not continue. Hope you dig it.

"The year has started off with a bang coming in through Medan, it’s always great to walk off the plane and feel that heat and smell the Gudang’s, you instantly know your in Indo just by the smell alone.
We came out to the island via Nias as the Susi flight don’t kick off till the next group. That mission is something that I hope I don’t have to take on again in the next 100 years it involves a flight then a long overland journey that feels like your back in the stoneage, lucky for the guests they don’t EVER have to do this. We (I’m traveling with my girlfriend Selby and her Dad longboard legend Mick Riddle) then crossed over to the Island from Nias via a traditional fishing boat and hopefully I don’t have to do that again this year either it’s a day at sea and any sort of weather and it would be terrifying.

Jack and Dave were onboard with us so we made the best of it and turned it into a floating bar cruise and Max came in a couple of days later cause of sourcing and bringing some extra gear with him to work on the new board shed and extras to fancy up what’s here already…
The building started with 3 -4days of milling boards and planning timber in 40 degree heat (see it’s not just all tubes and cold Bintang for the staff) finally now it’s out of the ground it’s going up really quick with Max and Jack running the show and all our staff such as Colobmbus ,Bedgi ,Andy and myself we also have Micky Riddle and 2 of Max’s friends Allan and Jamie on deck to help….

We have surfed everyday so far except one and the waves have been from 2-3 foot everywhere from the left to Kindys and Schoolyards and swell is on the way….
Also is unreal showing Selby my job and the paradise that we live in here hopefully she does not wanna leave :):):)….

Don't forget there is still a few spots for 2013 and we would love to see you so give Kellie a bell or shoot her an email on

We make no secret of the fact that our guides are also some of the best surfers in the world and in the case of Dane Pioli it would be pretty hard to cover it up. Dane's just killed an international field at the Australian Open of Longboarding to take out the elite "Noserider" division. While he's pretty good on the tip the young fella also straight up murders it in all the other disciplines as well and we thought we had better whack up a few images from his efforts out front and at GT's just to keep it in perspective … there's a whole lot more to his surfing than world class noseriding.

We got a hold of some pretty interesting tech this week that's tied into the new I-max project slated for May hope you like the view should be some more directly. Not a bad result from the guides playing round with the new systems this arvo.

… The answer is same thing as most of you guys … we had a bucket load of fun.
Lets start with Dave Simons our Marine Operations Manager. As most of you know Dave is a former professional surfer who has graced the cover of more surfing magazines than most humans and also featured in his fair share of feature length surfing movies.
Well it turns out he’s not totally done with that despite being focused in full time on his role at TIL and toward the end of the year we had a chance to shoot a few sessions out front and the Peel/Simons combo delivered again nabbing the cover of Australian Longboarding Magazine, pictured below.

Not long after this shot was taken and our annual AGM was wrapped up in Bali Dave vaporised to our Japan operation and swapped his surfboards for his snowboards and got stuck into what they are calling one of the best seasons in 50 years
( Check out www.annupurilodge.com.au ),
Yeah we have finally taken the plunge and gotten into the charter boat game … obviously we have gone for the best!!!

Peely had a quick blast around the mountain in Japan then left Rianna to hold the fort with Maxy and Dave to go finalise our newest venture “Exclusive Escapes Afloat” which involved a fantastic 7 days with our mate Alan Green down in a brand new region onboard his boat Indies Trader 4. We will have more on that in the coming weeks but needless to say it’s all new, all exciting and all benchmark stuff you are gonna love this new product, it has world class waves, world class diving and a marine environment like nothing you have EVER seen and at an affordable rate… details in the coming days some images from one of the regions to entertain you below, if you want to make a tentative reservation for this VERY limited product shoot Kellie an email at kellie@it4westpapua.com and when full details are available next week we will get them to you.

Kellie was in the trenches keeping everything on track for 2012 and has developed some pretty interesting new information and sales stuff that you will all no doubt be checking out in the coming weeks as well.
The Champ is here, the Champ is here!
Australian Longboard champ Dane Pioli joined the team officially during the off-season after a great trial period in 2011 and will be full time at the lodge in 2012. Between finalising his qualifications and permits for the new role and hauling some plaster he also had time to Nail a feature in a surf mag and zip across the ditch to have a crack at a WLT longboard event in NZ nailing down a credible 5th. That’s “Dangerz” below during his “Trial” period last year, needless to say the kid can surf and he fits right into our criteria of having the most experienced, capable and qualified guides in the game … your all going to love the kid.

Up at the lodge we have had the team rolling flat-out too and carried out bare metal resprays on all the boats, dropped a BRAND NEW set of donks on 80 Down to replace the 12 month old ones, rebuilt all the cargo boats, constructed a new lagoon boat with a traditional craftsman down in the main village, refurbished the whole lodge outside, re-painted all the outbuildings, stepped up all the linen to 5 star level (yep we have thin and thick pillows), rebuilt the bar, refurbished the lagoon house and all the decks, got a bunch of new umbrellas, finally de-commissioned our old dart board and put in a fresh one, installed a bunch of new freezers and storage, refurbed our generators little house, laid more grass, got an I-pad for guests to use, improved the outdoor shower, built a new rainwater catchment system, installed all new bunks for the staff, donated a thousand dollars worth of tin for the new church roof in the village, rebuilt our laundry to include double the washing capacity and an electrical cloths dryer, installed all new cupboards in the kitchen … the list goes ON and on and on and so did the surf.
From Nov to Feb the boys kept a diary and as you would know from the various surf reports online it was a great summer so we will probably keep the doors open for you this year to take advantage of the uncrowded perfection that is common Oct- March.
We are going to have a full time dedicated photographer at the lodge this year so expect more surf reports and video than ever before starting March 1 and the opportunity to pick up a great memento of your holiday.
On another front we are super stoked to announce we will be doing all our guest transfers ex Medan again this year utilising the fantastic facilities of the 5 star JW Marriott Hotel for any guests staying overnight and their beautiful lobby for anyone who has a stop over longer than 3 hours.

All of our air transfers will be carried out by using private charter of Indonesia’s largest fleet of Cessna Grand Caravan’s ( to know more about the plane we will be using check outhttp://www.cessna.com/caravan/grand-caravan/grand-caravan-overview.html ) via our friends of Susi Air using, English speaking western pilots taking things to a whole new level of safety and comfort . Check out some images of the Cessna Grand Caravan below.

That’s about it for this update but there is plenty more to follow Make sure you check out the 10 good reasons document we produced this summer and for anyone looking at 2012 there is still a few slots available (especially those 4 slots in March which is when the DVD pictured below was made at Telo Island Lodge) , for those of you looking to 2013/2014 make sure to contact Kellie onkellie@teloislandlodge.com as those spots are starting to close off but there are still plenty of prime one's available.
Can't wait to see you in the islands!
