Telo Island Lodge Newsletter #4 - 07/09/10

September 7th, 2010

Welcome to Newsletter #4 for 2010.

I was looking at the template of our last news letter (Number 3) and have realized how long it’s been since our last update … and how fast time moves.

The last 5 months have delivered a bunch of things, on the surf front the season has been pretty damn good and while 2010 has not seen to many of the giant macking swells we saw in 2009 it has delivered lots more smaller swells.

We got to experience the joy of cyber crime in the form of our website being hacked and pretty much disabled for ages. The funny thing was as part of the hack we had random adverts for Viagra, Cialis and the like appearing in our surf report section we thought it was ok especially when un-forecast it “Came up”.

We are pretty sure we have eradicated all the bugs now and should be able to return to normal broadcasting on the surf reports. Our regular Coastalwatch reports are up every Monday so check out the pics and video online there as well. http://www.coastalwatch.com/news/article.aspx?articleId=7956&cateId=3&title=Indo%20Swell%20Journal%20August%2030-September%205,%202010.

Our winter trips come to a close on November 22 and the good news is there are a few rare open slots for that trip and the one prior. This time of year delivers fantastic uncrowded surf and as the swell directions start to change leading into summer it opens up a few breaks we don’t really get to surf in winter. Kellie and the agents have some pretty sharp deals on those remaining slots as well so if your looking to squeeze in a surf mission prior to the traditional Australian horror stretch over Christmas it would be well worth giving them a call.

Everything else is as it should be. The guests on the current trip have been enjoying great waves so far despite an average forecast and the lodge is running at full capacity delivering smiles and good times all round.

Good Surfing.

Indo Swell Journal August 23 - 29 2010

North Sumatra

Its been a fun week up north this week and while the swell has not been epic by Indo standards it has remained super fun and any surfer in the area has had a pretty big grin on their face. The best waves were early in the reporting period around the 24-25th and then a second flare of swell graced us with it’s presence on the afternoon of the 27th. According to Ben MaCartney’s forecast we should see some action toward the end of this week again (last three swells have been on Thursdays or Fridays) so stay posted next week to see what gets delivered.

North Sumatra Report and Pics by Shane Peel.

The full moon this week saw some pretty huge tides that drowned a bit of the thump our fresh swell had when it first arrived.

Despite the conditions not being epic a bit of careful timing on the 25th saw a few deep tubes for those willing to search a little further.

The colors of the tropics were out in full force this week.

The view from the Coastalwatch North Sumatra bearau was a bit grim later in the reporting period.

Despite the ups and downs of the ASX and sporadic swell Greggy Down was a winner on all fronts this week.

North Sumatra.

The routine of two swells a week has been running pretty true and last week was no exception. Size and direction has started to change a little as the year goes on but this has opened up a bunch of options we don't really get to access a lot. Surfers have been tapping into some great head high surf most days and there have been a couple of exceptional days when the swells peaked. The best day was probably September 2, when a certain swell magnet enjoyed its best day of the year so far. Ben McCartney's forecast another hit of SW swell later in the week so stay posted for a full report next Monday.
