Hard to know how things are progressing with Halpin's Hero's trip and seems equally as tricky looking at the report that came through today.
Sunday has proved extremely challanging for J.H, he's had his faith tested at "Maxs left".
Early on this morning was too big for him, Later too tide effected, plus corbo (Michael) is lurking. We've rallied though and expect a big night of shells (Dave and Shane) wish you were here - so does Dane and DAN.

A short 10 minute speed boat ride from the Lodge and we arrived at one of Telo's best kept secrets.

2-3ft walls running down the outer reef and into the sandy key hole offered plenty of fun for all.

Over the next few days the forecast is showing an increase in swell and winds to stay out of the north.
Swell: 4-6ft on the exposed reefs.
Wind: 10 knots from the north.
Atmosphere: Low cloud.

Its was one of those beautiful afternoons in the islands, the sun was out and a clean 3-4ft swell was rolling down the reef at Max's Right.

"While working on the bathroom rennovation in the overwater bungalow all day i was watching perfect 3-4 foot sets roll through and finally after the last wall sheet went up it was time to run across the reef as fast as possible and spend the remander of the afternoon washing off the days sweat and dust by having an hour and a half solo session in our front yard. Couldn't be any happier, Dave and Guss had 2 different positions with their cameras as the light was awesome due to another perfect Samatran sunset."

Well I guess all the avid readers of Dane's updates in the "Latest Annoucements" section of the site would think that he has turned his hand at building or journalism and that he and the team have given up surfing. But this is certainly not the case so while we will return to normal programing shortly here's another little hit that arrived with a message "Hey Peely can you whack up this report we are on the silcone guns for the next 5 hours", lots of new stuff going on in and around the crew at the Lodge at the moment and the fact the boys were able to sneak a couple hours off to go nail these pits due to rain shutting down the building site is good news, so going by feel … a surf report:

Wind: Light and variable with the odd shower.

Swell: 3-5 feet with the odd bigger set.

Atmosphere: Smiles on the crew.

Tip of the day: No waves at this time of year … honest!

It's a long sequence below but worth it!

2012 Wrap-up.

In a flash it was gone …

We don’t know about you but 2012 seems to have flown past, it feels like yesterday we were greeting the first guests at the lodge and now it seems that 2013 is upon us.

We wrapped up our 2012 year with our friends from Australia’s Surfing Life Magazine who visited to conduct their annual board test. From all reports the crew scored and come the January edition of ASL you will get to see some familiar waves surfed at a level that mere mortals like the rest of us can only dream of. The grand old man of surf letters Nick Carroll was on hand so the offering will be top shelf.

In 2013 we are putting a continued emphasis on safety and even more focus on a personalised guest experience so there are some fantastic things you can expect. Our biggest investment will be in our industry leading, guide to guest ratio as we will have two full time, fully qualified western guides in place at all times in addition to our Indonesian guides. For those of you who visited in 2012 you’re probably happy to hear Dane and Dan will be coming at you live as Marine Operations Manager and Lead guide respectively.

Dan Corbett comes on full time as our lead guide in 2013.

We will also have the latest model defibrillator, oxygen, spinal board, neck braces and all new best in class safety and evacuation protocols in place in our charter to continue to lead the industry in guest safety..

In addition to the improved safety protocols we have also added a second boat option for guests wanting to either sleep late, rise early or perhaps enjoy the warmth of a midday market visit and as always it’s double redundant.

Dave Simons has stepped up to the role of full time General Manager focusing on logistics and the day to day operations of the lodge but rest assured if it’s pumping he’s sure to be out and about “reviewing operations” from inside the pit.

Restu’s tireless team in the kitchen are also undergoing extensive training this off-season to deliver a culinary experience fitting an operation such as TIL.

During the off-season all our Marine Operations Equipment has been hauled out and refurbished and will be primed and ready to go.

Another development in enhanced guest services is the placement of a full time photographer at the lodge which will allow guests to purchase high quality images of their holiday. Our senior photographer for 2013 is none other than the world famous Andrew Shield.

We will also continue our transfers ex Medan taking advantage of all the facilities and services of Indonesia’s 3 rd largest city provides and look to maintain our 100% success air transfer record again in 2013.

If you have already secured you spot for 2013 or are one of our many return guests we look forward to seeing you out in the islands again and if you have not had the opportunity to lock down a spot please feel free to view our current 2013/2014 schedule at http://www.teloislandlodge.com/schedule.php or contact Kellie direct for current availabilities, booking and travel information on

MOB: +61 (0) 412 482 655

E-Mail: kellie@teloislandlodge.com

We would like to wish you and all your families a happy holiday season, all the best for the New Year and look forward to seeing you in the islands soon.

Favourite Waves...

Piney's Left, formerly known as Max's Left is a favourite amongst our guests, but none like it better then John himself. John is currently here on his 7th trip to Telo Island Lodge and claims the left is one of the best in the world. This morning at 6 am he was on the boat with Daniel our guide and heading out of the lagoon, 5 minutes later he was in the water surfing 4-6ft, 250m long perfect lefts all alone for 2 hours and not another surfer to be sight, With sessions like that its little wonder he loves the place and keeps returning a couple of times a year.

The shots below are from Piney's Left and GT's over the last few days.

The waves are on the decline for 3-4 days before another solid SW swell is expected. The smaller surf with open up alot more options so check back to this page for more update's.

The Grommet Rips...

Meet Master Ethan Davis, 13 years of age, calls Bonte (Sydney) his local beach and from watching his last session at LeBa we think he could be one of Australia's next big thing's in surfing. Although the kid has only been in the water with a board under his feet for 3 years his wave knowledge, board control and full rail power turns are some of the best i've seen out side of the top 44 guys in the world.

Check out the images below of Ethan doing his thing on the perfect walls of LeBa. The last shoot is mid way through a maneuver called "The Club Sandwich" Basicly you hit the lip, grab the inside rail, go into the air upside down, land backwards and nose first on the wall of the waves then spin around and keep riding. Nice and basic hey!!! He didn't pull this 1 off clean but i'm tipping it won't be long until he is doing this kind of crazy stuff on every single wave.

We Had it all today with perfect pinnacles in the morning, Ping Pong, arm wrestles and a 28th birthday to celebrate.

After our morning surf it was arm wrestles, Ping pong and a few drinks till midnight to celebrate Dave's 28th Birthdays.
Happy Birthday mate!
The next swell should start showing tomorrow afternoon so stay posted for the reports.

Fun In The Islands….

After 5 days of great waves our current lodges guests opted for a more mellow day, 1 surf in the morning, a few beers over lunch, a massage, fishing in the afternoon, watched the AFL footy on TV after dinners then a few more quite beers before bed.
By the looks of the forecast a rest day was a great idea because by Sunday afternoon the swell is right back up.
5-8ft at 17 seconds is a goodie and we will be riding it Monday morning.

Back to the beloved Max's Left...

We woke this morning to light east south east winds and still plenty of yesterdays 4 foot swell rolling through out the front.

These conditions only lead us to 1 place and thats Max's Left, loved by surfers with 1 years experience all the way through to the pro's.

It was 4-5ft, off shore and peeling down the reef for 250 metres.

Epic, Pumping, Best ever, so much fun, were just some of the words i heard over lunch.

Tomorrow is looking good as well with much the same conditions.

Swell: 4-5 feet.

As the sun was setting on the back of our island their was happiness in the air.
Four hour session at LeBa this morning and tag team surfing Max's Right all afternoon was probably why.
It was an awesome way to start the trip and little wonder the beers were flowing on the front deck well into the night.
The forecast is looking great as this swell is due to hang around for the next 3 to 4 days before a another great pulse is due on the 25th.
Swell: 3-5ft

Change Over Day…
I had a little flick through the guest book this afternoon and found 1 quote that summed Trip 11 up " 10 days, 10 awesome set ups, 10/10 for each wave surfed" it pretty much went like that, every day the boys scored epic waves at all our favourite spots.
1 last surf at Max's Left sealed the deal this morning and all guests flew out stoked.
The new crew on Trip 12 look like their in for much the same with a nice bump in the swell on Wednesday.

More to come out of this swell and of course there's another one on the way.

There is nothing better then having a holiday and staying directly infront of your choosen activity, if its staying on the montain for a ski trip, camping on the river for a fishing trip or in this case surfing is your purpose and choosing Telo Island Lodge as your go to surfing get away.

Our current guests have been returning for 5 year and they love it, being able to wake every morning, have a quick surf directly in front (Max's Right) then over breakfast decide to jump in the boat and surf something different or just hang out and surf all day at the lodge.

Below are photos from the early session at Max's Right while the fishing boats are heading to work, the ER for those that choose to look else where and an arvo session straight out front.

Its On Again...

Another perfect day here in the Telo Islands with Gt's, Max's Right, Max's Left, LeBa, Sepika and every other reef pass lighting up and once again showing why Telo Island Lodge is the number 1 fly in, fly out surfing destination in the world.

It was a hard call this morning to drive away from 6 ft perfect walls steaming through Max's Right, but Knowing that the take off point is only 100m from the lodge and the wind was coming from the north ment it would be still pumping on our return.

Gt's was on from the minute we arrived, a little smaller then yesterday but just as perfect. The W.A. boys ripped it apart again and after surfing for 4 hours it was time to head home for lunch.

During the 15 minute boat ride home their was talk of surfing a left for the afternoon session, the group was split, 3 guys surfed faultless Max's Right and the other 5 guys Headed around the back of our island to find Max's Left 4-5ft and peeling for 300 yards.

Super fun day again and more to come tomorrow.

Perfect Day In Paradise...

This morning started with a 15 minutes blast down the channel to Gt's where we found waves that were nothing short of amazing.

On the way home the long walls of Sepika just looked to good to be true and the lads couldn't resist getting another hour in before lunch.

The afternoon session was simple, stay at home and surf pumping Max's Right till dark.

Our current Guests Are West Aussie boys and today the skills they learnt growing up surfing the famous rock ledge waves of "Down South" really shone through.

Dane Pioli, lead guide and all round water man had this to say about today's sessions, "It was so good, best Gt's i've seen, Sepika was pumping and now Max's Right is just going to get better and better as the afternoon roles on. This place is amazing, i guess today is a perfect day in paradise"

Surf Stoked

Guided paddle boarding, surfing with just 2 mates and a discussion on fin designs was what the West Aussie boys got up to during this weird weather day, blue sky morning, windy rainy midday and a spectacular under lit sunset that turned the Max's Right white wash into a crazy pinky purple colour.

But it was Agus, our Indonesian speed boat skipper that stole the show, while all our guests were swilling Bintangs on the front deck Gusy saw the opportunity to go out and grab a couple just before dark, the boys on the deck went crazy as he paddled into what they claimed to be the wave of the day, he took off, pulled in, rode the barrel and kick out, simple but yet so effective.

What a great day! Today we surfed back at the E.R and scored some super fun waves, lefts and rights. Today is looking like the last of the small surf. Tomorrow we are expecting a good increase in the swell and should see a lot more of waves in the chain light up.

The boys have been keeping busy and are getting ready for what should be a great week of waves here at Telo Island Lodge.

Surf report March 31st

Halpin’s Hero’s have arrived! It was plane day yesterday and a new group is in.

The surf has eased up for a couple of days but not to worry surfing is only one of the many things this group gets up to. We have been having a bit of fun in the bar and around the lodge. Don’t need to comment to much about last night the images talk for themselves. On the surf front its looking like a couple relax days but by the end of the week the swell is going to swing right back into those Sumatran patterns were used to. Stay posted for updates.

And the waves don’t stop! Last night at Tello Lodge we had a hidden music skill shown from our guest’s from New Caledonia. After an epic session and a few beers the instruments came out and so did the music. Everyone kicked back and let the music drift across the lagoon… an epic night.

On the surf front it was straight back to the E.R for the same great conditions as yesterday. The Guests surfed for 5 hours followed by a quick trip home for lunch and some time out of the sun then it was back out there. Everyone couldn’t be more stoked. Great waves, great music, great food and no one else around, not much more we can ask for.

What a great day in North Sumatra today. The swell this morning had eased off a bit but no worries, it was straight of to the E.R for some nice overhead waves while most of the region suffered from small conditions. Our guest had the option of surfing the long bowling left or the tight hollow right, what more could you ask for and not another boat or person in sight. Stay posted for the next couple of days as it’s looking like some nice waves will be rolling through the chain.

Go Daneo!! March 26/2012

Dane smashes em at the Australian Open!

We make no secret of the fact that our guides are also some of the best surfers in the world and in the case of Dane Pioli it would be pretty hard to cover it up. Dane's just killed an international field at the Australian Open of Longboarding to take out the elite "Noserider" division. While he's pretty good on the tip the young fella also straight up murders it in all the other disciplines as well and we thought we had better whack up a few images from his efforts out front and at GT's just to keep it in perspective … there's a whole lot more to his surfing than world class noseriding.

The sun is out the waves have dropped enough for a few of the small wave spots to start firing and the water is crystal clear and 29.9 degrees why would you wanna be anywhere else. There have been a few marathon sessions in the last couple days since the last report and just about everyone on the island other than the momkey has had a chance to hit the super fun conditions.

The swell is due to ease a little more across the next few days and with the arrival of one of the founding groups (Halpins Hero's) pending there has been plenty of prep going on in the bar and the boat.

Surf Report OPENER 2012

Wanna know what we did in Summer?

… The answer is same thing as most of you guys … we had a bucket load of fun.

Lets start with Dave Simons our Marine Operations Manager. As most of you know Dave is a former professional surfer who has graced the cover of more surfing magazines than most humans and also featured in his fair share of feature length surfing movies.

Well it turns out he’s not totally done with that despite being focused in full time on his role at TIL and toward the end of the year we had a chance to shoot a few sessions out front and the Peel/Simons combo delivered again nabbing the cover of Australian Longboarding Magazine, pictured below.

Not long after this shot was taken and our annual AGM was wrapped up in Bali Dave vaporised to our Japan operation and swapped his surfboards for his snowboards and got stuck into what they are calling one of the best seasons in 50 years

( Check out www.annupurilodge.com.au ),

speaking of the snow we have also decided to bring a bit of that flavour to the lodge in Indonesia this year and former head Chef Rhys Hartigan from the exclusive Charlottes Pass resort in Australia’s high country will be joining Gerry and the boys in the Kitchen to take things to the next level and deliver what will be the best dining experience at any surf resort on the planet with a fantastic fusion menu that combines all your old favourites with a bunch of new stuff.

NOW for some big news!

Yeah we have finally taken the plunge and gotten into the charter boat game … obviously we have gone for the best!!!

Peely had a quick blast around the mountain in Japan then left Rianna to hold the fort with Maxy and Dave to go finalise our newest venture “Exclusive Escapes Afloat” which involved a fantastic 7 days with our mate Alan Green down in a brand new region onboard his boat Indies Trader 4. We will have more on that in the coming weeks but needless to say it’s all new, all exciting and all benchmark stuff you are gonna love this new product, it has world class waves, world class diving and a marine environment like nothing you have EVER seen and at an affordable rate… details in the coming days some images from one of the regions to entertain you below, if you want to make a tentative reservation for this VERY limited product shoot Kellie an email at kellie@teloislandlodge.com and when full details are available next week we will get them to you.

Kellie was in the trenches keeping everything on track for 2012 and has developed some pretty interesting new information and sales stuff that you will all no doubt be checking out in the coming weeks as well.

The Champ is here, the Champ is here!

Australian Longboard champ Dane Pioli joined the team officially during the off-season after a great trial period in 2011 and will be full time at the lodge in 2012. Between finalising his qualifications and permits for the new role and hauling some plaster he also had time to Nail a feature in a surf mag and zip across the ditch to have a crack at a WLT longboard event in NZ nailing down a credible 5th. That’s “Dangerz” below during his “Trial” period last year, needless to say the kid can surf and he fits right into our criteria of having the most experienced, capable and qualified guides in the game … your all going to love the kid.

Up at the lodge we have had the team rolling flat-out too and carried out bare metal resprays on all the boats, dropped a BRAND NEW set of donks on 80 Down to replace the 12 month old ones, rebuilt all the cargo boats, constructed a new lagoon boat with a traditional craftsman down in the main village, refurbished the whole lodge outside, re-painted all the outbuildings, stepped up all the linen to 5 star level (yep we have thin and thick pillows), rebuilt the bar, refurbished the lagoon house and all the decks, got a bunch of new umbrellas, finally de-commissioned our old dart board and put in a fresh one, installed a bunch of new freezers and storage, refurbed our generators little house, laid more grass, got an I-pad for guests to use, improved the outdoor shower, built a new rainwater catchment system, installed all new bunks for the staff, donated a thousand dollars worth of tin for the new church roof in the village, rebuilt our laundry to include double the washing capacity and an electrical cloths dryer, installed all new cupboards in the kitchen … the list goes ON and on and on and so did the surf.

From Nov to Feb the boys kept a diary and as you would know from the various surf reports online it was a great summer so we will probably keep the doors open for you this year to take advantage of the uncrowded perfection that is common Oct- March.

We are going to have a full time dedicated photographer at the lodge this year so expect more surf reports and video than ever before starting March 1 and the opportunity to pick up a great memento of your holiday.

On another front we are super stoked to announce we will be doing all our guest transfers ex Medan again this year utilising the fantastic facilities of the 5 star JW Marriott Hotel for any guests staying overnight and their beautiful lobby for anyone who has a stop over longer than 3 hours.

All of our air transfers will be carried out by using private charter of Indonesia’s largest fleet of Cessna Grand Caravan’s ( to know more about the plane we will be using check out http://www.cessna.com/caravan/grand-caravan/grand-caravan-overview.html ) via our friends of Susi Air using, English speaking western pilots taking things to a whole new level of safety and comfort . Check out some images of the Cessna Grand Caravan below.

That’s about it for this update but there is plenty more to follow Make sure you check out the 10 good reasons document we produced this summer and for anyone looking at 2012 there is still a few slots available (especially those 4 slots in March which is when the DVD pictured below was made at Telo Island Lodge) , for those of you looking to 2013/2014 make sure to contact Kellie on kellie@teloislandlodge.com as those spots are starting to close off but there are still plenty of prime one's available.

Can't wait to see you in the islands!

All the staff and management of Telo Island Lodge.

Surf Report Archive September 2011

29th.

It's been a few classic days since the last report and yesterday in particular (28th) was a cracker. Light winds and overhead waves saw Max's left firing on all cylinders. The current crop of guests surfed themselves into the ground and with a third swell due toward the end of their trip there should be some tired blokes heading back to Sydney on Monday. The swell has eased from yesterday so the crew are out and about hunting down the best options nearby. We'll keep you posted as the next swell hits.

26th.

As a bit of a foil to the rights the boys from Sydney have been surfing the last few days we have had a crack at the left round the corner (Max's Left) it has been pretty fun and despite the fading swell there has still been a few overhead waves. Aussie Longboard champ Dane Pioli has been up at the lodge helping out Dave with the guiding and scoring his fair share as well. Next swell is due mid-week so standby for a report when it hits.

Surf. 2-3 feet.

Wind. Moderate.

Atmosphere. Overcast.

25th

It's been a fun start for our crew from the Northern beaches of Sydney. Day one was a "Blow the dust off" session at Max's left and then yesterday was a notch further up the pole with some tubes at GT's. Today has seen the wind continue to ease and it looks like we will be back around to the left for some fun in the sun. This week looks to have two different swells in the window so hopefully we will get to sample the many options close by.

Surf. 3-5 feet.

Wind. Moderate.

Atmosphere. Sunny with light high cloud.

18th.

Ashen skies this morning and no shortage of wind, it's offshore out the front though so as it eases that may be the go for today. Lat few days the guests have been out and about surfing a few different breaks and the smiles tell the story. There is some interesting movements on the models for later in the week so we will keep you posted as things develop.

14th.

Well it's been a couple of great days with a gradual easing of the wind, there has been more than enough great waves to be had by a keen surfer, not epic by Indo standards but still a whole lotta fun. Today saw a welcome return of the blue skies after a prolonged absence and even more importantly those nice oily glass conditions we all love up in Sumatra. Next few days will see various options open up so a pretty good vibe all round and if the three spots on the long range model are right it could be one of the better Septembers in a while.

12th.

The southerly wind pattern that has been pounding the region for the last few weeks finally let-up yesterday and the waves that get good on other aspects instantly sprang to life. The guests we're on it and surfed rights and lefts with everything from tubes to … well tubes!

The trend is for it to ease a little today before another good bump tomorrow, mmm September Sessions.

With a subtle change in direction of swell surfers in North Sumatra had to be on their game today with location selection, for the crew who are currently in the lodge it was as simple as paddling out directly in front of their bedrooms as the arvo gold filtered in.

August has been a great month for swell but as is normal this time of year we have been getting a fair lashing of rain and wind so todays text book conditions were a great present from Huey.

As you can see from Henrys bottom turn the waves have remained well overhead and the trend should continue into tomorrow.

Next few days should see it in the 3-5ft range and just in time for our new guests. Check this page for the up coming action.

Surf Report 2nd&3rd August

Pumping waves and new discoveries.

The last 2 days here at Telo Island Lodge have been nothing short of "EPIC".

Starting from 6:30am on the 2nd August we awoke to a little rain but pumping 4ft waves straight out the front at Max's Right. As the rain cleared we loaded up the speed boat and headed down to GT's, there we found some fun hollow rights and surfed through till lunch. The afternoon session was spent on 4ft Max's Left and enjoyed by all.

6:15am this morning (3rd August) was one of those perfect Sumatran wake ups. Max's Right 4-6ft waves turning inside out right in front of our eyes. The options were endless, everywhere was going to be great today.

We headed out to Leba as the first port of call and found amazing conditions that everyone feasted on.

Not ready for lunch just yet, we thought we should have a look around at a few previously un-surfed islands. To our happiness we scored a super fun right that has to be one of the prettiest back drops I've seen. The Boys names it "Smurfs" After Murph (Ben Murphy) who got the best wave out of the guys that surfed it.

Below are some pic's in order, starting from Max's Right on the 2nd, threw to Smurfs on the 3rd.

Surf Report 1st August

The swell is up and so is the wind.

15 knot strong South winds are still blowing in the islands, waves are up around the 3-5ft range and Max's Left is still the pick of the breaks.

No one is complaining as its straight off shore, 250m rides and 5 minutes in the speed boat from the lodge.

Swell looks set to stick around for a few more days so book mark this page and keep an eye on it.

Below are some pic's from this mornings session.

Strong South winds blew today putting a nice breeze threw the lodge and creating 2-3ft clean lined up lefts on the other side of our island. Max's Left was the pick and fun was had by all.

The afternoon surf was called off for a long over due rest and the Tri Nations Rugby Test showing live on the lodge TV was the only excuse need to put the feet up and have a few cold beers with mates.

It's been one of those pretty special weeks and despite a fair bit of rain and wind the sunny periods were blessed with fantastic surf. Our last swell is easing but with a fresh one due in its place tonight things could not be better for the incoming and the outgoing guests. The outgoing guys are a bunch of mates from Melbourne on their first visit and across the week they got to have a look at more than the normal amount of places fully lit up, to their credit they had a crack at some of the heavy stuff and most will be heading home with some hard earned bragging rights … and a bit less skin. The incoming guys are all repeaters and may be set for one of the classic weeks of the year. Stay posted.

Ok sorry for the lapse in reports the last few days we have been a bit derai led getting ready for the impending arrival of the WA Dream Team and Halpins Hero's in the coming weeks. This involves lots of drinking, setting of traps, scheming and general organisation for our more intensive time of year … hence the lack of reports.

The surf has remained steady and last night saw the new full moon rise as a fresh swell hit. It rolled in with a bit of a storm though and today is a little messy out there at nearly all spots bar the left which is pretty good in the 3-4 foot range. It's been one of those days you only get in Indonesia. Perfect long period lines, plenty of sun and clean blue overhead walls, the direction of this swell had a bit of a change mid morning when most of the photos below we're taken and it's almost going into an easing trend as evening falls. Regardless the surf is gonna be epic again tomorrow and the monster swell showing for the end of the week will see this as one of the better weeks of the year so far.

As predicted, the swell really kicked in this afternoon, 4 hours of offshore winds and a tide change cleaned the ocean up to what is known as "Perfection". the boys opted for no boat journeys, just a 60m stroll across the reef to surf 4-6ft Max's Right.

Well it's great wether if your a frog, bird or duck right now. Rain and thunderstorms have moved into the region overnight and to be brutally honest it's plum average out there today. Yesterday was being billed as one of the cleanest days ever at one of our wave magnets and there was some pretty big smiles at dinner last night as the days escapades we're recounted. Today … well today is kinda the polar opposite with grey replacing blue as the predominate colour. There are still plenty of fun waves though and the sunscreen is gonna get a break after the hiding it copped the last few days.

In other news one of our long time regulars "Piney" is also rumoured to be coming out of the closet to all his mates later in the year during their visit to star in a new surf movie produced by the crew from Mardi Gras "Brokeback Barrels" it's a move long forecast by "Woggy"who has always attested to Pineys skill in the "Alternative" part of society and suspected by the local staff for many years.

Today was one of those classic March days in Sumatra. Dawn was windy and rainy and at first glance it would have seemed coffee and movies was a better option than surfing but as only North Sumatra can things changed! Around 8.00AM a slight wind shift turned into a big wind shift and a chance check of one of our favourite spots revealed a little potential. An hour latter it was firing. From 8.00 till 11.30 this was our script, quick drive back for lunch then from 1.30 - 5.00 another dose of the same despite a BIG low tide, We topped it off with a quick hour of power on the left round the back of home right before dark for the goofies ending one of those days you dream about. Surf Report March 1/2011

It's been quite a break since the last surf report but we are back online and will be delivering a lot of different content for you to check out this year.

A quick recap on Nov, Dec, Jan.

November was rainy and on average 2-3 feet with two substantial swells that got to 4-5 feet.

December was dry and sunny on average 3-4 feet with 3 GOOD swell one that hit 6 feet solid.

January had a good start and the back end produced as well probably averaged 3-4 feet for the month.

So that gets us to now. Feb was a little sporadic then the back end went nuts with two great swells the last being Feb 25 that saw the various breaks as good as they get. Today Feb 28 the guests are out at the left chasing down the remnants of that swell and a fresh one is due Tuesday. Most of the pics shown are from Jan and Feb. We will be posting our entire archive of video reports from 2010 shortly and adding new ones to the site across 2011.

OK we know the reports have been missing for a while so I guess there are no excuses. The surf has been pretty damn good and as you will see from the Indo Video Swell Journal on Coastalwatch Monday night it has actually been pumping … but not today. Fishing was the order of the day and the results were pretty good( 5 to the spear and 7 to the rods ) Our head guide Dave Simons was responsible for most … well actually all of the spear kills and the guests nailed the rest. Surf is due to rise across the next few days so stay tuned.

It's the swell that refused to die and AGAIN today we were surfing super fun overhead waves. There was a slight change in wave heights so we were out at the wave magnets getting the last of the goodness. The shot above is Eric "The Viking" coming off the bottom at ER lefts after a nice late drop.

Late addition Muzz and Hooky below with a nice Wahoo (Hooky's) and a couple of bits of bait (Muzza's) after a day of waves a couple of fish to finish off!

Well it just keeps keeping on! There has been a slight drop in wave heights but there is still PLENTY of great surf around. Today is bright and sunny with light off-shore winds. Out the front was picture perfect but the guests have jumped in the boat to do a bit of exploring of the options nearby, my guess is Schoolyards or the ER. The pic above was this morning out front (about 60M's from the front lawn) the forecast for the coming week is looking pretty special so keep an eye out for a Coastalwatch update on Monday night and a few more reports right here till then.

Well the swell seems to have peaked and things are holding in the 3-5 foot range, most surfers have been round at Max's lefts and today was no exception. Waves were super fun sunny offshore walls with the odd tube for the keen guys across the inside. The forecasts seem to hint at another rise this week so stay posted.

Well they say when it rains it pours and that has certainly been the case the last couple of days since we last gave you an update. Max's left has been firing since the 22nd and today was no exception 3-5 feet of ultra fun glassy left walls. A few pretty good surfers are in North Sumatra at the moment and with Ben McCartney's Coastalwatch surf forecast coming true it's gonna be an interesting week indeed hopefully we can bring you a bunch of images as it happens. We had a pretty strong storm last night then today dawned bright and sunny with a great new swell in the water, All roads led to Max's left and there were heaps of overhead sets and the odd tube down through the inside at Roffey's corner. Full blast Sumatran sunshine today and combined with the high tides it's kinda story-book conditions, there is 3-4 feet of residual swell floating around and out the front has been good and then today the left was OK as well. General trend is easing in the swell dept but a rise is due on the weekend. Stay posted. Shot above was late last night around 6PM.

Coastalwatch Indo Swell Journal: May 10th - 16th, 2010

Coastalwatch Indo Swell Journal: May 10th - 16th, 2010

Presented by Telo Island Lodge.

North Sumatra.

As we hit the mid way point of May, conditions have started to become a little stop-start as is often the case as the year wears on. The early part of the reporting period (Sunday the 9th - Tue 11th) were by far the best waves of the week, with’ the odd 6 footer floating around for those willing to set the rail and pull in.

This changed radically on the 13th and for those of you who follow Ben McCartney’s Indo Swell Forecast would know what happened next. Most of the computer models predicted 4 meter 19 second swell, but it failed to materialise. (Ben got it right predicting the much smaller conditions that turned up) and was instead replaced by a VERY mixed up junky west swell and 25-30 kt winds.

Those conditions maintained until this morning (Sunday May 16) but as this report gets typed sunshine and light winds have returned. A quick check of swell models reveals a decent pulse in the next couple of days though, hopefully it will be a repeat of last week when a banging swell and favourable winds combined on report day. Either way we will be back next Monday with the full wrap-up in the Indo Video Swell Journal.

Surf Report May 14

It's been a pretty big gap since last report due to the fact we have been surfing our heads off! A bangin little swell hit last Sunday and from then till today (14th May) it's been all hands on deck as the guys in Group 8 squeezed the last few bits of energy out of their system and the guys from Group 9 got their froth on. Monday and Tuesday saw the left still firing with some of those levely late arvo glass sessions and then as the swell petered out we have been over surfing schoolyards and havin a ball. Today we are looking at very strong wind and a possible lay day. There is a very complex forecast in front of us right now and it's full of conflicts. Seems that the wind is going to blow in the extreme range … for here and we could be looking at a couple of days with winds in the 25 Kts range but there is also a 4 meter swell predicted so it's a tough call. Will the wind ruin what is predicted to be our biggest swell of the year? Is the swell prediction just because of the wind? General consensus is that the swell is on the way regardless and we should have a bunch of surf in the next 48 hours. Time will tell but for today it's a case of watching the footy and waiting to see what develops. The pic above was last Sunday afternoon down at GT's, the one below is Tim Watt same spot different wave … slotted.

It's a case of the drop before the rise here at the moment. The waves are pretty small but still super fun the guys have been surfing the ER and Schoolyards and as I'm typing this there seems to be a new long period swell showing on the outer reefs outside my window. Tomorrow is kind of D-Day for the new swell and hopefully we wake up to firing condies … we'll keep you posted. Morning has broken under grey skies and cool temps after a little rain overnight and the swell has eased under a pretty big tide. Wind is from the north quarter and has a bit of push behind it today. I have put the Buoyweather report (a great service you should all check out) up as a pic above and as an experiment we are going to see how close it goes to being correct this next few days. The guests are out surfing Sigata and there are still big smiles so I am guessing there are plenty of head high waves around.

Despite our best efforts to drink up the swell last night the forecast rise has been a little slow in showing and this morning it's around 3-4 feet on the bigger sets but mostly in the 3 foot range. It's the last day for group 5 and they are due to exit on the plane at 11.00 so all (who had full function of the body) have headed off for one last blast at the left hander. It's sunny at the moment and hopefully the weather holds for a neat change-over between group 5 and 6. The pic above is from earlier in the week when serial pest and self affirmed wave-hog John Halpin rode his millionth wave through the inside at Max's left. As you can see from the pic above wave heights have lifted and are holding around the 4 foot mark. This swell arrived yesterday afternoon (when the pic was taken) and has maintained through the night. We have slightly overcast skies with sunny periods today and it's all systems go at the left right through the tides. It looks like the blocking storm/cyclone that was sitting below us off NW Australia has faded so hopefully this is the start of a good run of swell that looks stacked in the lower Indian Ocean at the moment.

After a brief period of sun and some great waves yesterday afternoon (3-4 feet on the sets) early risers were treated to strong winds and slightly smaller conditions today. There is still a few waves around but it's not looking super inviting. The was a sizable earthquake on the island of Similue north of us this morning but we did not feel it down here in Telo. Our agents in Medan felt it and I am sure the people of Similue felt it. In other big news the Cronulla boys on trip 5 have been causing havoc with drinking games and our guide Steve certainly felt the wrath last night. We are hoping for improved conditions as the week goes on so stay posted for updates.

Well not a whole lot to report today, the wind is offshore round at the left and it's about 3 feet clean and fun as hell. It's a bright sunny day and also plane day where we change over the guests. There's a solid swell due mid week so hopefully we will have some updates then (reporter is headed to Medan for a few days so there will be a gap people) also no pic today due to time constraints … sorry.

Surf Report 20th March.

The swell has kept holding and we are looking at another group of tired guests right now at Telo Lodge, after the feast of rights the left has turned on today and is around 3-5 feet. We have slightly overcast skies and a highish tide cycle for most of the day. The left is blowing light offshore with glassy periods and I'm calling an all day attack there. The pic above was at 11.00AM.

Surf Report 19th March

Well the good waves are still around and this morning at high tide there were still a few out the front in the 4-5 foot range. A predicted wind shift has turned up just now (11.00AM) so the guests are headed round to the left. Slightly overcast with sunny periods and a little light rain early. Anyway have a good Friday arvo and if your in Oz Avagoodweekend!

We scored a nice surprise with the afternoon high tide yesterday and the surf out front at Max's right really turned on and pumped right through until a wind change on dark. Surf Report March 8-14

North Sumatra. March 8-14.

The great start to the year has continued up in North Sumatra and the last week has seen waves ranging from 3 to 5 feet with the odd bigger set.

There seems to be a procession of mid range swells and while wave heights have not gone off the scale consistency has been Epic. Most of the breaks in our region have had a few good to excellent days and surfers in the area have all been smiling ear to ear. The model for the next week is showing great promise and hopefully March will keep to form and perhaps even outstrip last years record.

The North Pacific provided one of the better Summers in recent times and by the looks of things the Indian Ocean has taken up the challenge and is going to deliver as well. Our next swell is due as your reading the report so expect a great review next Monday.

All our favorites light up.

GT's, La-ba, Max's Right and Left have offered some amazing waves over the last 10 day, lots of calls have been made "Best waves I've seen", "That was the surf of my life", "Best barrels I've had" I think I even said a few myself. Basically it has ranged from 4ft - 8ft throughout the island chain, light and variable winds and not much tidal movement, PERFECT conditions. Swell is on the decrease as i write this report but there is still a few epic days in this one and it looks like another boomer behind it. All in all a fantastic October so far and possibly one of the best months of the year.

Keeps on keeping on!

Well we are getting close to September and the back third of our year and it's been a pretty good one. July was pretty much run of the mill with plenty of rainy, windy, flat days interspersed with big long period swells. August was very similar but perhaps the duration of swell was a little longer. As we enter September we are looking at a VERY active Southern Ocean and it looks as though the start of the month is going to fire. September is always a welcome change after the rain and wind of the peak months so we will keep you posted as it happens.

It's Pumping … still!

The arvo update.

Driving back in the keyhole from the left out the front was on fire so we have a few going right and a few going left for the afternoon wind is starting to puff from the north so it's rights for afternoon tea.

Wow what a difference a day makes. Bright and sunny this morning and a brand new swell cracking on all the reefs. Out the front is 4-6 foot on the sets and spitting and round at the left it's an aquatic speedway. Lo oks set to hold for a day or so more then back up thurs night. Fingers crossed.

North Westers

A neat carve at Pinnacles.Over the last couple of days we've had moderate to strong NW winds blowing across the island chain, Pinnacles, School Yards and our resort break, (Maxes Right) have seen great waves ranging from 3 to 6ft.

Tomorrow shoul d see the same wind and wave patterns ahead of a new SW swell due Thursday afternoon around 5 to 7ft on all the south facing reef passes.

White Horses

White Horses

Congratulations to Gra and the team at MM on their first edition of White Horses. We were lucky enough to receive an advance copy of WH a few weeks ago and were blown away by the artistic images & editorials. A refreshingly intellegent read!

"After much anticipation (and rumours of advance copies being sighted from Torquay to Angourie to Gnarloo), White Horses hits the stands today.

We could tell you about its unique approach to storytelling, of its production and editorial values, how White Horses connects with an audience of intelligent readers who don't have a title cater directly to their desires… but fortunately the magazine can now speak for itself.

No claims of reinventing the genre, no tweets, no lavish launch party at a groovy inner city gallery, just 144 pages surfers will enjoy and appreciate.

The first issue is on-sale tomorrow and has a retail price of $19.95.

Grab one from your nearest newsagent or order your copy right here.

For a preview, check out the Issue #1 teaser video." From the editor at White Horses

Around the grounds

As you all know we did some pretty extensive renos in December so these photos are a quick "Around the grounds" to give you a look at the new outdoor furniture and some of the landscaping. We had a truck full of amazing plants brought in from Medan (you can see two of the cicads at the front door) so our out door areas are looking pretty special. We have also put up a panoramic view of the lounge and dining area so you can check the new furniture. Rooms and bathrooms to come in a couple days.
